Lichfield Today is an independent news and information site for Lichfield and its district. We work from public records, we link to them, and we are not connected to the council or to anybody we report on.
The district
Lichfield city is the centre: the cathedral close, the market square, the pools and the streets around them. Burntwood is the district’s other town, larger than people from outside assume and with a different history behind it. The rest is villages, among them Alrewas, Fradley, Shenstone, Whittington, Armitage, Hammerwich and Elford, spread out between the A38 and the Trent. About 113,000 people live across the district.
What we report
Lichfield District Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Trent and the local brooks, and company filings in The Gazette. Staffordshire County Council runs roads, schools and social care rather than the district, and we name the right body rather than sending your complaint to the wrong desk.
What changes in 2028
Lichfield District Council is due to be abolished on 1 April 2028 and folded into a new South and Mid Staffordshire unitary authority made up of six districts and covering roughly 690,000 people. Decisions currently taken for a district of 113,000 will be taken for an authority six times the size, with no obvious centre among its parts. That is a real change in how close the decision-making sits to the city, and we will report each stage from the published papers.
